Charmander, the Lizard Pokémon
“A Charmander’s life is intrinsically tied to the fire on the tips of their tail. While they grow in their eggs, their tails never spark; once they are born and exposed to the natural air of the world, their tails immediately ignite and begin to burn. Charmander do not have a natural immunity to their fire, though, as the youngest hatchling among them can suffer burns by playing with their tails or the tails of others; fire still burns them at this age. It takes months before a Charmander will no longer be harmed by their own fire, and several more for them to find the capability to use it in battle, often spewing it from their mouths.”
“Thanks to years of research and understanding, we know the fire on a Charmander’s tail has ties to the Pokémon’s heart and health. How strong and brightly the flame burns is indicative of various ailments or wellness for the Lizard Pokémon. The largest and brightest tails are a sign of a healthy and powerful Charmander, while small and weak flames can suggest hunger, sickness and weakness after battle (these variations are distinguished by the Charmander’s attitude at the time as well.) But when we say the flame has ties to their heart, we also mean that it can be viewed similarly to an atria. The fire of its tail surges up its body and into its heart as a source of energy alongside the blood its heart pumps, and were the fire on its tail to be snuffed out in any way for a long enough period of time, it could stop the Charmander’s heart and inevitably kill the Pokémon. So too does the interaction work in reverse; were the Pokémon’s heart to stop and never start back up, for any reason, its tail would stop burning too. Their tails will burn even as they sleep, so if any Charmander is seen without a flame on its tail, it has already passed on to the next life.”
