Mystery Man

Who knows the real you?
How much do you show?
When no one is looking,
Where do you go?

Inside your head,
What would I find?
If I checked for your heart,
Would you mind?

Where in the world
Would someone see you,
And know the look on your face
To be true?

Could I come with?
Could I stay?
Could we live in that world
Where the walls we put up are washed away?

Diglett, the Mole Pokémon

hand-drawn artwork

A Diglett can be a farmer’s best friend or their worst enemy. As a burrowing species, Diglett spend most of their lives underground carving out tunnels and cave systems for their colonies, avoiding the sunlight before it can burn their thin skin; but they do not dig too deep. Most Diglett won’t live more than a yard’s distance beneath the surface, putting them in the perfect position to feed on the roots of growing plants and crops. But this depth of travel means they upset the earth over their heads, raising them as clear markers of their path. Combined with the droppings they leave behind, a Diglett’s digging can perfectly till the land for farmers to grow their crops, and to keep the Pokémon the outskirts of their farms and as thanks for their work on the fields, farmers will plant trees for the Diglett to congregate around and feed on instead of the growing food.
The Alola region houses a tougher version of the Diglett. These Alolan Diglett have tougher claws and thicker skin, in part thanks to the more iron-enriched soil of the islands of the region and the harsher climates between them. Their claws can dig through volcanic rock without the heat burning them as easily as it would their pure Ground-type counterpart, and they sport a set of metal whiskers atop their head they use to communicate with one another and judge their surroundings before they dig. One thing both Digletts have in common, though, is the mystery of their species. Diglett stick their heads less than a full foot over the ground, and are a species commonly afraid of others, prone to escape their presence. Even domesticated and trained Diglett are unable to fully trust their trainers and fellow Pokémon, hiding the lower portion of their bodies beneath the earth’s surface, away from prying eyes. As mankind has yet to develop sufficient technology to see through other surfaces with X-ray vision like the Luxray have, we are still uncertain of the full body and shape of the Diglett species and its evolutionary line.
