Misnomers

How long will it be before you tell them?

Who you are is not who they think
Who looks back in the mirror has a different name
You know it. Only you, so far
You’re tentative to walk out onto that stage
Introduce the you you’ve discovered out in that wild world
Uncertainty of your audience brewing hesitation

Did you know the electrical eel is actually a knifefish?
The American buffalo is actually a bison
Horned toads are just punk-dressed lizards
Mountain chickens, frogs of all things, would have been closer to the name

Red pandas aren’t seen as an embarrassment
Mantis shrimp are really just their own people

So many misnomers no one has bothered correcting
Maybe the mountain goat is too afraid to belt out his real name for us
But the day it does, zoologists will listen
The mountain goat has to believe that, after all this time
The people who pay it attention really do care

Exeggcute, the Egg Pokémon

“Exeggcute, despite their species name and label, are not actually eggs. Their six-segmented bodies are actually made up of a series of seed-like organisms, each carrying the genetic code of various plants of larger sizes than themselves. It is believed this mix of DNA is why the species has to forms evolution; one that embraces the species’ telepathic trait and transforms it into a wider control of Psychic powers as an Exeggcutor; and another that calls upon more destructive forces that makes the Exeggcutor they evolve into to be taller and harness Dragon-type energy instead. But as an Exeggcute, this Pokémon will always be made up of six seed heads, as anything less sends the rest into a state of panic and fury, while anything more simply isn’t possible when the species is first born. As already mentioned, the Egg Pokémon in this stage does have a telepathic power similar to the Doduo, able to communicate thoughts and feelings with its other heads as they navigate the world as a tight-knit group.”

“But the Pokémon has never grown out of this misconception of being called an ‘egg’ Pokémon. Many trainers and biologists still refer to the species by their categorical name even in professional settings, despite the fact modern research has already proved the Exeggcute to be more seed-like than egg-like. Any attempts at legislation to amend this error and refer to the Pokémon correctly continue to be shot down by lobbyists for many agricultural groups.”
