Attraction

A sunrise morning as her backdrop
Silver locks make a glittering silhouette
Golden teeth refract the light into my eyes
Captures the picture of you

Whisks me off my feet
Like arms under my own
Like hands cupping my cheeks
Like a breath against my neck

A shock, down my spine
To feel confined to this grip
Heat bouncing back and forth
Trapped between two hearts

And then one heart went cold
A cube of ice in my hands
Its weight grounding me to the earth
The weight of the sky is her memory

Here I wait, to be whisked off my feet
For feathers to fall at the foot of my bed
Walking down a stairwell of the sun
To take me with you

Magnemite, the Magnet Pokemon

hand-drawn artwork

Magnemite are a species that survive solely off consuming electricity. A more recent Pokémon line whose discovery dates back only about one hundred years ago, Magnemite bodies are made of pure iron, save the mechanical-organic eye front and center on their spherical bodies. As this Pokémon has no mouth, it consumes electricity through absorption, seeking out high-voltage locations using the horseshoe-magnet-shaped-units on either side of its body. Magnemite will be drawn to these locations in droves, crowding power plants and any facility using a lot of power to run, draining these places of energy not only to fill their bodies but permit them the same ability to defy gravity that Geodude have naturally. Without enough electricity and energy in a Magnemite’s body, they would fall to the ground and be unable to move unless another electric type came by to share their energy.
But Magnemite are on their way to becoming an endangered species. Without more natural occurrences of highly-magnetic regions, like the Chargestone Caves of Unova, Magnemite’s main means of survival makes it an infestation to human society. The majority feed on man-made sources of electricity, and they have been a frequent problem causing blackouts for days at a time in many regions. To combat this problem, many source facilities of electricity have implemented technology that produces soundwaves only the Magnemite can hear and that drives them away. And as companies move bulks of powerlines inside cities underground, more and more societal resources of energy are being cut off from the Magnemite’s reach. Their population is shrinking a noticeable amount, and if a solution for healthy coexistence is not found, or if the species fails to evolve and adapt to these harsh conditions, we may find the Magnemite species disappear in due time.
