Onix, the Rock Snake Pokémon
“Onix are impressively large and powerful Pokémon in nature. Found mostly underground, excavation beneath our surface owes much to the effort the Rock Snake Pokémon take in living their own lives. Onix burrow through the earth with their body, twisting to drill through the layers while consuming the dirt and stones they pass through for sustenance. While on the surface this can cause mild tremors, what they leave behind are complex cave networks connecting most corners of a region with one another, that mankind have explored and other Pokémon have come to inhabit endlessly. Many regions owe thanks to Onix for creating some of the first connecting caverns between towns and cities before the age of technology.”
“Sadly, Onix do not live long lives; though they may sport a strong defense, they lack the proper strength to overcome many opponents they often dwarf in size. Most who do live longer lives do so by evolving into the more powerful Steelix, either in the wild or in the hands of trainers. Before the days of regulated Pokémon ownership, Onix used to live far longer than they do today. Those that reached old age barely resembled the form they’re known for today, as the decades smoothed their edges and their stone bodies took on a shining black color; this is how the Pokémon came to earn its name, resembling onyx stones in what was once believed to be their final forms before the discovery of Steelix.”
