For Who Hears You, Loves You

You know where you are in the world,
What and who surrounds you,
For who is there when you cry

Zubat, the Bat Pokémon

hand-drawn artwork

Zubat are a Pokémon species that struggles to live outside of the caves they are most often found in. Years and generations of living in dark and damp locations led to Zubat of the past not just losing their sight but sealing their eyelids shut; Zubat today still have organs like eyes grown underneath the muscles of their face, unable to use them for anything. Their skin has grown so thin in the dark that sunlight can burn them even after only a short period of exposure, and even make them sick. It is near impossible to spot this Pokémon outside in the day, and even in their caves a Zubat will sleep the hours of daylight away unless they are disturbed by travelers.
Unable to rely on their sight, Zubat instead learned to navigate solely on echolocation. From their mouth, a Zubat can produce ultrasonic soundwaves that bounce off their surroundings and that only those of their species can hear. This is how they manage to fly and avoid collision with stalagmites and stalactites in their cave networks, along with avoiding other Pokémon and people they don’t recognize. The sound is also unique to their colony, as Zubat who have lived separate from each other produce sounds of different frequencies attuned specifically to where they grew up and live.
